After having left school in Year 10 I found it difficult to make ends meet as a single parent so I went back to study Year 12 as a mature aged student. Since that time, I have obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing (with a sociology major), a Graduate Diploma of Law and a Master of Marketing Communication.
My interest in community has been life-long, and in many cases, hard-fought.
I have a special admiration for the important role that volunteers and carers play in taking care of those who are sick and vulnerable. My mother died from cancer some years ago and I experienced first hand how hard it is to look after someone you love during this difficult time.
For many years my sister has cared for her daughter who has a life-threatening chronic illness. I understand the joy and struggles of a life like hers and I am aware of the cost financially and emotionally to families with special needs.
Through these and other experiences, I have encountered many inspirational people whose lives have made them extraordinary. These are the people who have compelled me to explore what I can personally contribute to make Australia a truly great country.
I have been active in several community groups over the years and I am currently on the Board of VOCAL [Victims of Crime Assistance League] ACT as well as the Queanbeyan Council Heritage Committee. I was one of the founding members of EMPOWER (Eden Monaro People Want
Employment Rights) and I am a board member of the Hepatitis C Council of the ACT.
I have a deep interest in social justice issues and the need for strong financial security. I want to ensure that Australia has a fair industrial relations system and I would like to see increased support for people on pensions, particularly for the aged and people with a disability.
I want to help protect our environment – by demanding for better policies on water and strategies for practical renewable energies to help preserve our planet for the future.
I am also concerned about the issues facing our Indigenous people, and I want to help give them a greater voice.
In a global sense, I am disheartened that there is enough food to feed the world yet thousands die each day from starvation and poverty related causes. I cannot accept that we have the technology to purify water yet millions of people throughout the world don’t have access to safe drinking water. I cannot accept that millions of people die each year because they can’t afford basic medication – yet multi-national pharmaceutical companies make multi billion dollar profits each year. I cannot accept that our planet is being destroyed by the pollution of the industrial world, by corporations who focus on profit alone and by governments who have recklessly ignored the warning signs that have been present for years. I cannot accept that in 2007 we are still killing each other because of religion, greed and intolerance.
It is not my education or work experiences that will make me an effective member of parliament, rather it is as a mother, past student and active member of the community, that I know first-hand the challenges we all face in juggling the demands made on our time and on our hip-pockets.
Like many other Australians, I have had to make sacrifices on a daily basis to do the best by my family and friends. It is this insight and personal experience and sheer belief in my community which will enable me to best serve the Australian community.
I want to assist people who struggle with life’s challenges and inequalities, and I want to help people without the resources to get governments at all levels to adequately address their needs.
As a politician I also want to remind us what is important in life – and it is not just about the accumulation of wealth – it is about family, friends and community.
